Who is Unfold?

About Unfold

After moving to Colorado in 2019, Rachel Storey (now McCarl) wanted to explore the consulting world, so she formed Storey LLC. While thinking it would end up as a side project, she ultimately built a strong portfolio of independent work, with a particular love for nonprofit and mission-driven clients. Working at a strategic level while also being a “doer,” she’s assessed and fine-tuned clients’ systems for scale, doubling (or in one case, quadrupling) grant and fundraising revenue—while also managing and writing more than $300M in winning grant proposals. By 2022, Rachel was consulting full-time, and in 2025 she established a new organizational name: Unfold!

With Unfold, Rachel provides consulting services across three interrelated but distinct core areas, helping clients more effectively win funding in the immediate term, while also building the systems for longer-term success and growth.

Open new funding streams and unlock opportunities with less stress. We write and manage winning grant applications and provide wide-ranging proposal support to boost immediate funding. We research upcoming opportunities and relevant funders, making recommendations that help you apply to the most strategic and competitive opportunities.

Expand organizational capacity to sustain award revenue long-term. We strengthen internal funding systems and business development processes to better track and pursue opportunities, and we help build external strategies and funder relationships that sustain revenue over time.

Thrive through efficient and compliant operations. We assess what’s working and what isn’t, then help implement human-centered processes and tools that increase compliance, reduce frustration, save time, and keep your team focused on impact. We also help with procurement, develop policies and manuals, and technology adoption/digital transformation.

About Rachel

After beginning her career in Washington, DC, Rachel McCarl now lives and works in Littleton, Colorado. She holds an MA in Global Affairs & Management from Thunderbird School of Global Management and a BSc in Marketing and Mandarin from Clemson University. Rachel began her career in internationally focused grant development and implementation, which took her around the world to live and work in countries including Cambodia, India, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Uganda. Now, under her company Unfold, Rachel helps solve problems more locally, working primarily with small (and often nascent) nonprofits and social enterprises to help them streamline and scale while staying true to their missions.

Rachel studied Mandarin throughout school, but currently is focused on improving her Spanish fluency to more effectively work with Colorado’s diverse communities. She’s passionate about optimizing our food systems to reduce food waste and improve community nutrition, and she actively advocates for building equitable and just communities across Colorado. While she has volunteered with many of Colorado’s nonprofits over the years, she currently serves as a volunteer swim coach with the Special Olympics (Go Lakewood Lightning!). Rachel spends her weekends hiking the alpine trails or mountain biking on the Western Slope.
